The Omaha Lancers took the lead in the second period then stayed out of reach, edging the Waterloo Black Hawks 4-2 at Ralston Arena on Friday, January 2, 2015.

Omaha scored the game’s first goal at 3:14 of the second period; Jakob Forsbacka-Karlsson won a faceoff back to Brendan Smith, who snapped a shot into the net from the high slot. The same play led to an Omaha power play goal at 14:01, when Forsbacka-Karlsson pulled the draw back to Shane Gersich, who lifted the puck to the short side.

Waterloo drew within a goal twice in the third period but could not complete the comeback. At the 3:40 mark, Brock Boeser sent a spinning shot off the post and into the net. However, Steven Spinner cashed in on a transition opportunity 42 seconds later.

Tyler Sheehy made it a 3-2 game with a power play blast to the top corner at 8:26. Omaha ended the comeback bid at 12:56, with Nick Rivera following up a stalled rush to flip a shot between the pipes from the left faceoff dot.

The Lancers had a 37-28 edge in chances; it was the first time the Hawks did not outshoot their opponent since early November. Trevor Gorsuch made 33 saves in the loss; Kris Oldham won with 26 stops.

The Hawks’ weekend concludes on Saturday during a Prairie Farms Cowbell Cup tilt versus the Dubuque Fighting Saints at Mystique Ice Center.
