A first period outburst was more than the Waterloo Black Hawks could overcome Wednesday during a 10-4 loss to the Omaha Lancers at Ralston Arena.

Two goals in the first three minutes vaulted the Lancers in front. Anthony Angello and Jakob Forsbacka-Karlsson each struck on early chances. Brandon Montour provided the first period offense for Waterloo during a power play with a shot from the high slot to the top corner at 11:58.

However a flurry of Omaha scoring drowned out the Waterloo rally. Steve Spinner scored on a power play at 14:09. It was the first of three goals in less than one minute; Brian Williams and Forsbacka-Karlsson followed up at 14:37 and 14:53 respectively. Angello added one more goal, a shorthanded breakaway from his own blue line, at 17:57.

The Hawks stuck with it in the second, winning the period 3-2 despite a goal at 1:56 by Jake Gingell. Semyon Krasheninnikov capitalized on a one-on-one opportunity at 4:02. A redirection by the Lancers’ Nick Rivera increased the home team’s lead temporarily at 11:03, but Montour’s second power play goal at 15:17 and a shot to the stick side by Rem Pitlick at 16:58 gave Waterloo a boost before intermission.

Hopes for a miraculous comeback were quashed in the third. Forsbacka-Karlsson completed his hat trick at 4:16. Rivera notched the final goal of the evening 26 seconds later. Despite the final, Waterloo outshot the Lancers 37-30.

Thursday night, the Hawks host their annual Thanksgiving night matchup against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders at 7:05. Tickets for the game are still available and can be ordered online from waterlooblackhawks.com or by calling the Domino’s Black Hawks Box Office at (319) 291-7680.
