Man's best friend just got downgraded to man's best acquaintance.

Richard Remme, 51, of Fort Dodge was roughhousing with his dog, Balew, the night of Wednesday, May 9th, 2018. Balew is a pit bull-Labrador mix.

Remme told police that he was playing with his dog and when the dog jumped back up on the couch, he must have disabled the safety on the gun in his belly band and stepped on the trigger. The gun went off and struck Remme in the leg. Remme was treated at the hospital and released later that day.

Remme told the Fort Dodge Messenger that Balew knew he had done something wrong and cried as he lay beside him.
