September 12th is National Video Games Day. An Iowa man founded the United States National Video Game Team in 1983.

On July 25th, 1983 in Ottumwa, Iowa, Walter Day founded the United States National Video Game Team. The team would travel across the country to challenge players at other arcades and even took on foreign countries.

Day purchased an arcade in 1981 in Ottumwa, and after reading an article about video games in Time, he became inspired to create the international scoreboard database through the company "Twin Galaxy." This is where all the official video game records are kept. After the site launched, "Twin Galaxy" was receiving 50-75 calls per day of gamers wanting their scores and records showcased.

The International Video Game Hall of Fame is still in Ottumwa.
