Traffic is flowing normally again following a fiery accident that forced the partial closure of Interstate 380 in Black Hawk County for several hours on Wednesday (June 22, 2016).

Black Hawk County sheriff's deputies responded the crash near the U.S. Highway 20 interchange east of Waterloo around 9:30 a.m. They discovered the mishap involved two semis and a DirecTV van.

Upon arrival, deputies said they learned that Curry Viverette, Jr., 68, of Ford Heights, Ill., lost control of the northbound semi tractor-trailer he was driving near mile-marker 64.5. The rig entered the outside ditch and rolled on its side.

According to sheriff's deputy Tony Meyer, the driver of the DirecTV van stopped on the interstate shoulder to render aid to Viverette as he was exiting the semi cab. That's when a second northbound semi struck the rear of the van and exploded, as the rig entered the inside ditch.

Meyer said the DirecTV van was unoccupied when the semi slammed into it and burst into flames. Officials said Joseph Nichols, 31, of Waterloo, was driving the van when he pulled over to offer assistance to Viverette. Authorities identified the driver of the second semi as Daniel Mahon, 52, of Abington, Pa.

Mahon and Viverette were both treated at the scene for minor injuries and neither man was transported to the hospital. Nichols was not injured.

The accident blocked the northbound lanes of Interstate 380 near the U.S. Highway 20 mix-master for nearly six-and-a-half hours. The Iowa State Patrol confirmed that the closed portion of the interstate was reopened around 4 p.m.

Meyer said the accident remains under investigation. Black Hawk County sheriff's deputies were assisted at the scene by Evansdale police and ambulance personnel, the Iowa State Patrol, Iowa Motor Vehicle Enforcement, Iowa Department of Transportation, and La Porte City fire officials.
