A Northeast Iowa highway had to be closed down for over an hour after a semi loaded with hogs rolled over on Monday (Dec. 14, 2015).

The accident happened just before 7a.m. on U.S. Highway 18, east of West Union. According to Fayette County authorities, a semi, loaded with market hogs, went out of control and rolled onto the highway.

Officials said the driver -- Kyle Bishop, 23, of West Union -- escaped injury, but about 30 hogs were killed. The rest were taken to a local farm.

Authorities closed the road until it could be cleared for traffic.

Bishop was charged with failure to maintain control.
