Historic Tombstones Toppled
The Oelwein Police department is looking for the person or persons who vandalized a local cemetery.
Sometime Monday night or early Tuesday, someone entered the Oakdale Cemetery, located on the southwest side of Oelwein, and damaged about half of the tombstones.
The cemetery is of historical note, as the original Oelwein family, of which the city is named, is buried at the site. Some of those tombstones were also damaged.
According to sources, most of the damage was done when tombstones were pushed over and off their pedestals.
Also, the light located on the Civil War soldier monument was broken.
A damage estimate was not available, and the incident remains under investigation.
