Hawks March Away from Saints in USHL Action

The Waterloo Black Hawks scored in every period to outdistance the Dubuque Fighting Saints 4-1 Friday, October 3, 2014 at Young Arena.

Tyler Sheehy had no trouble scoring the game’s first goal from a sharp angle, lifting a shot to the net with his toes on the extended goal line 5:27 into the first period. During a power play, Hayden Shaw’s diagonal pass found Sheehy to the right of goalie Kevin Reich, and the veteran forward hoisted a chance to the long-side top corner.

The Hawks doubled their margin nearly six minutes later. Crisp passing between Brandon Montour and Larry Jungwirth left Brendan Shane with an open net, and he didn’t miss at 11:23.

Penalty minutes began to stack up in the second period, but Waterloo scored the only goal during the segment while the teams played at even strength. At 8:22, Niko Hildenbrand stuffed the rebound of a Phil Beaulieu chance across the goal line. Meanwhile, six combined power plays for the Hawks and Saints went for naught.

Dubuque drew back within two goals 5:06 into the third period, when Brett Boeing’s shot from the right circle sizzled through traffic and past the stick side of Hayden Lavigne. However, the Saints were denied during a pair of third period power plays, and Marcel Godbout sealed the win with 40.3 seconds to go, scoring into an empty net.

Waterloo finished the contest with five successful penalty kills. Lavigne made 32 saves.

The Hawks make their first regular season road trip on Sunday. The matchup against the Lincoln Stars will begin at 4:05 p.m.
