A $25 million dollar bond issue for Hawkeye Community College is on the ballot in 10 area counties today (Tuesday, February 3, 2015).

Voters are being asked whether to approve the measure to finance major capital improvement and service projects at the school. HCC officials say, since an existing levy is ending, a "yes" vote will not increase Hawkeye's overall property tax rate. For the average homeowner, the bond issue will cost approximately $1.10 per month based on a home valued at $100,000.

According to school officials, the bond issue would fund the following projects:

  • A new adult education center to replace the College’s Metro and Martin Luther King, Jr. Centers
  • A new health sciences technology center
  • Expand job training/educational opportunities at high schools and off-campus outreach centers
  • Renovation of Grundy Hall on the Waterloo campus

If approved, the bond rate would be in effect for 10 years.

Hawkeye Community College serves all or parts of Benton, Black Hawk, Bremer, Buchanan, Butler, Chickasaw, Fayette, Floyd, Grundy, and Tama counties.

Registered voters in the following 22 school districts can vote on the measure: Allison-Bristow, Aplington-Parkersburg, Cedar Falls, Clarksville, Denver, Dike-New Hartford, Dunkerton, East Buchanan, Gladbrook-Reinbeck, Grundy Center, Hudson, Independence, Janesville, Jesup, Nashua-Plainfield, North Tama, Sumner, Tripoli, Union Community, Wapsie Valley, Waterloo, and Waverly-Shell Rock.

The polls will be open today from noon to 8 p.m.
