An Iowa State Patrol trooper was killed during a nearly five-hour-long standoff at a home in Grundy Center.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation has confirmed that a the trooper died after apparently being shot Friday night.

The standoff is believed to have began when a motorist was pulled over for speeding. The motorist went inside his home on G Ave. (Iowa Highway 175), triggering the standoff.

Witnesses reported hearing shots fired during the standoff, which began around 7:30 PM Friday and ended around 1 AM Saturday. Police officers from Grundy Center and Cedar Falls were involved in the standoff, along with the Iowa State Patrol and sheriff's deputies from Grundy and Hardin Counties.

Officials with the Iowa DCI plan to release more details on the standoff later Saturday. They have scheduled a 2:30 PM press conference at Grundy Center High School.
