Police are investigating a four-vehicle accident that injured three people in Cedar Falls Tuesday evening (Feb. 28, 2017).

Authorities were called to the intersection of Iowa Highway 58 and Ridgeway Ave. around 6 p.m. on a report of a crash involving a semi tractor-trailer and three other vehicles.

Police said two people were transported to a Waterloo hospital for treatment, while a third suffered minor injuries. The conditions and names of the injured have not yet been released.

The crash closed one of the busiest intersections in Cedar Falls for nearly two hours. Officials said the collision ruptured the fuel tank of the semi-truck, which held more than 100 gallons of diesel fuel. The spill and removal of vehicles forced officials to direct traffic away from the area.

Police said their initial investigation indicates that an eastbound pickup on Ridgeway Ave. likely caused the accident by running a red light. The pickup collided with another pickup and a passenger car, which were traveling in opposite directions on Highway 58. After impact, the car and first pickup both struck the semi.
