Authorities are looking for a federal fugitive who eluded capture in eastern Iowa on Wednesday (Aug. 8, 2018).

Vinton police said they were notified by the United States Marshal's Service that Kody Harris, 35, was traveling to the community. He's wanted on federal warrants for a probation violation.

In a press release, Vinton police said they saw Harris driving a car into the city around 10:15 PM and followed him. As officers approached the vehicle, Harris drove off and a high-speed pursuit through the downtown business district began. According to police, Harris ignored several traffic control devices. They estimated that his vehicle was going more than 80 MPH.

Officers lost sight of Harris’ car on the east side of Vinton, but they were contacted by alert citizens who
observed him hide the car and run into the woods near the Cedar River. Police failed to find Harris, but they located and arrested a female passenger hiding the woods.

April Baldwin, 37, of Cedar Rapids, was taken to the Benton County jail on charges of carrying weapons and interference with official acts. She was also wanted on a Linn County warrant for probation violation.

Harris is still wanted by federal authorities for a probation violation. Authorities think he may still be hiding in the Vinton area. While Harris is not believed to have violent tendencies, police are cautioning local residents to keep their house doors locked and not leave vehicles unattended with keys in them so they won't be stolen.

Vinton police said they plan to file additional state charges against Harris, once he's captured.

Anyone who sees Harris or knows of his whereabouts, should call Vinton Police at 319-472-2321, the United States Marshal's Office in Cedar Rapids at 319-362-4411, or their local law enforcement agency.

Authorities are also reminding residents to maintain a safe distance when watching or recording any law enforcement activities. According to Vinton police, their efforts to stop Harris during the high-speed pursuit were hampered by multiple young adults who ran into the street in an apparent attempt to record video the chase. Police said an officer swerved to avoid striking one of the young adults.
