Evacuations are currently underway in Greene and other parts of Butler County, due to the rapidly rising Shell Rock River. Multiple homes and businesses are now being impacted by floodwaters.

Officials have opened an emergency shelter at North Butler High School in Greene for anyone who needs a place to stay. Classes at the school and throughout the district were cancelled for the day on Thursday (Sept. 22, 2016).

Some spots in Butler County and neighboring Floyd County received as much as 10 inches of rain since Wednesday afternoon (Sept. 22, 2016). The rain was accompanied by large hail and at least three tornadoes.

Law enforcement and Butler County emergency management officials are asking everyone to stay away from the areas that are flooding because of the danger involved. The Shell Rock River Thursday morning was near the record level that was reached in 2008, officials said.

Butler County Emergency Management officials posted the following message on Facebook Thursday morning:

Area rivers are also rising in Floyd County, where the Cedar, Shell Rock and Winnebago are all expected to leave their banks. Officials are projecting major flooding for the Cedar River at Charles City, where the National Weather Service is expecting a crest as high as 20.7 feet by Friday morning.

According to Floyd County emergency management officials, firefighters and police officers were going door-to-door Wednesday night, notifying residents and businesses in flood-prone areas of possible evacuations. Authorities are making sandbags available to Charles City residents and businesses only, starting at 1 p.m. Thursday. Sandbags will be available to fill and pick-up at the Hy-Vee parking lot in downtown Charles City.

Floyd County emergency management officials posted the following message concerning flooding on Facebook Wednesday night:

The heavy rainfall has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a series of flood notices for rivers and streams downstream from where the flooding is currently occurring. Flooding for the Cedar River is expected from Charles City downstream to Waterloo-Cedar Falls and Cedar Rapids.
