Tanya Warren is being rewarded for the success of the UNI women’s basketball team. The Panthers’ head coach has agreed to a two-year contract extension that will keep her in Cedar Falls through March 31, 2023.

UNI athletic officials announced the deal in a press release on Tuesday (March 28, 2017).

“I am humbled, blessed and extremely thankful to David Harris, Christina Roybal and President Mark Nook for entrusting me to continue to lead this program over the next several years,” Warren said. “I look forward to continuing to work closely with my staff as we strive daily to help our young women develop both on and off the floor.”

Warren guided the Panthers to their third NCAA Tournament appearance in 2016-17. The program earned its first at-large berth into the 64-team field after posting 24 wins for the second consecutive season. UNI was a No. 10 seed and played No. 7-seeded DePaul in Starkville, Miss.

Warren has 186 career victories at UNI, the most of any coach in program history. She became the school’s all-time wins leader on March 4, recording her 184th win when the Panthers beat Missouri State at home.

“Tanya continues to do a phenomenal job with our women’s basketball program,” said David Harris, UNI Director of Athletics. “From last year’s regular season Missouri Valley Conference championship to earning our first-ever NCAA at-large bid this year, we have enjoyed great on court success.

“Additionally, the accomplishments of our student-athletes in the classroom are among the best in the nation. Tanya is a great fit for our institution, and we are fortunate to have her as our head coach. We look forward to working with her for years to come.”

A Des Moines native, Warren is a three-time Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year. She has led UNI to 17 or more wins in eight straight years and an upper-half finish in the MVC in each of the last eight seasons – both of which are the longest active streaks in the league.

Warren’s efforts have also been strong in the classroom as the Panthers have finished in the top 15 nationally in team grade-point average in seven of the last eight seasons. Under her direction, UNI players have earned the MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Year award four times (Jacqui Kalin – 2011, 2013; Madison Weekly – 2016, 2017).
