Grundy Center showed the dominance of a third-ranked team at the Iowa High School State Volleyball Tournament Wednesday afternoon (June 8, 2017).

The Spartans (37-6) blew out No. 6 Sidney in the Class 2A quarterfinals, sweeping the Cowgirls (31-6) in straight sets at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids. Game scores were 25-12, 25-17 and 25-18.

Grundy Center's cross-court game was on full display on Court 2, with Hailey Wallis and Landry Luhring leading a balanced effort. Luhring ended the day with 23 attacks, seven kills and nine digs. Wallis finished with 23 attacks and 11 kills, plus had four digs.

Kylie Willis and Emy Kracht had a strong presence for the Spartans as well. Willis had 24 attacks, 13 kills and three digs, while Kracht tallied 13 assists five kills and nine digs. Kyah Luhring also contributed 15 digs.

With the victory, Grundy Center earned a rematch with the team that eliminated the Spartans after their surprising state tournament appearance a year ago. Grundy Center next faces defending champion Western Christian of Hull in the semifinals at 4 p.m. Thursday.
