Grundy Center Coach, A.D. Leaving After Two Decades

Rollie Ackerman has been selected as the new athletic/activities director at Marshalltown High School. He has served in a similar capacity at Grundy Center for the past 13 years and also taught and coached throughout his 21 years at the school.

Ackerman said he is excited to get started at Marshalltown.

“I am extremely honored and humbled at the opportunity,” he said. “I was very impressed with the professionalism shown during the interview process and felt very welcomed all throughout.”

Ackerman looks forward to learning more about the district and the people who make the activities work.

“It is an exciting challenge that I look forward to and I am looking forward to meeting with the coaches, sponsors, ticket takers, scoreboard operators, and all the other people involved who make activities programs occur, and who make possible the opportunities for Marshalltown students to be a part of,” Ackerman said.

Ackerman holds a bachelor’s degree from Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa and a master’s in educational administration from the University of Iowa.

On the coaching side, Ackerman began his high school career at Dumont, before taking over the Spartans' program. He coached Grundy Center for 17 seasons, before taking a break from the bench in 2010-11 and 2011-12. Ackerman began his second stint as Grundy Center's coach in 2012-13. According to the Iowa High Schoool Athletic Association, Ackerman compiled a 280-240 career record while coaching boy's basketball at the two schools.

Ackerman's coaching career also included a stop at Wartburg College in Waverly, where he served as an assistant coach for a time.

At Marshalltown, Ackerman is replacing Craig Huegel, who accepted a position at Iowa City West High School.

Ackerman’s appointment is on the agenda for approval by the Board of Education at tonight's meeting. Pending the board's action, Ackerman will begin his duties at Marshalltown on July 1.
