Bucks Swept Again In Day-Night, Split-Site Twinbill

The Waterloo Bucks had a rough day on Monday (Aug. 1, 2016).

Coming off Sunday's night's 17-inning loss at Mankato, the Bucks arrived 90 minutes late for their scheduled 11 a.m. game at La Crosse due to travel issues in Minnesota. Then, the Loggers swept Waterloo in the day-night, split-site doubleheader.

In the afternoon game at Copeland Park in La Crosse, the Bucks were shutout by the Loggers, 11-0, while being limited to just two hits. In the evening game at Waterloo's Riverfront Stadium, La Crosse completed the sweep with a 9-3 victory.

All-in-all, the first day of August was not good for the Bucks, who've won just 3 of 13 games since the Northwoods League All-Star break and haven't record consecutive victories since July 9-10. With the three losses in two days, Waterloo (9-16, 31-29) now trails Willmar by two games and La Crosse (13-9, 31-28) by a half-game in the race to fill the North Division's final playoff spot.

GAME 1 - At Copeland Park, La Crosse, Wis. (12:35 p.m.):

In a game that began 90 minutes after its scheduled 11:05 a.m. start due to travel issues for Waterloo on the trip east from Mankato, La Crosse dominated the Bucks, 11-0.

Loggers start Mark Nowaczewski (4-3) tossed a season-high 8.1 shutout innings in the victory. He retired 19 of the first 21 hitters he faced and yielded just one hit and three walks while striking out five.

Alex Boxwell recorded the lone hit off Nowaczewski, leading off the fourth inning with a single to left field. Tristan Walters relieved Nowaczewski in the ninth and allowed the Waterloo's other hit, a one-out single to center field by Travon Benton.

La Crosse tallied single runs in the first and second innings, before doubling the score to 4-0 in the third. The Loggers broke the game open with a seven-run fifth inning, which included a three-run home run by Mason McCoy (Iowa).

Jonathan Buckley (1-2) was charged with the loss for Waterloo in his second start of the season. The right-hander allowed a season-high 11 runs (10 earned) on 12 hits, while striking out three and walking four.

GAME 2 - At Riverfront Stadium, Waterloo (7:35 p.m.):

The delayed start in La Crosse caused the 7:05 p.m. game in Waterloo to start about 30 minutes late. The Loggers jumped out to an early lead in their 9-3 victory.

La Crosse built an 8-0 advantage before Waterloo scored. The Loggers scored twice each in the third and fifth innings, and plated three runs in the sixth. They also added a single run in the seventh, before the Bucks ended their 16-inning scoreless streak.

Waterloo scored its first run of the doubleheader when Adam McGinnis hit a solo home run over the right-center field wall in the bottom of the seventh. It was McGinnis' team-leading 10th home run of the season and gave him his team-best 49th RBI.

Each team traded runs in the ninth inning, when the Bucks trimmed the deficit to 9-3. Jake Hand started the frame with a single to left before Luke Barry brought him in with an RBI double off the right field fence. Travon Benton later delivered the final run of the night with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Barry.

Brett Solano (5-5) suffered the loss in game two, going five innings and allowing five runs (three earned) on nine hits while walking none and striking out three.
