Nick Swaney climbed to ninth in United States Hockey League scoring over the weekend, leading the USHL to name him its CCM Forward of the Week on Monday.

The University of Minnesota-Duluth recruit has been the Waterloo Black Hawks’ leading scorer for much of the 2016/17 season, and Friday he led the Hawks to a 4-1 win against the Tri-City Storm. Swaney scored the goal which proved to be the game winner during a mid-second period power play.

Later in the period, he assisted on another special teams score, then recorded his second goal of the night early in the third. It was Swaney’s first multigoal game of the year, but his seventh appearance to include multiple points. The veteran’s second goal was the 50th of his career for the Hawks during regular season competition.

Swaney struck again on Saturday, recording the opening goal of the night. However, the Storm prevailed, 5-2.

Through 21 games this season, Swaney paces Waterloo with 11 goals, 21 points, and a +15 plus/minus. Four of his goals have now been game-winners. He is tied for the team lead with 10 assists.

During his first full USHL season in 2015/16, Swaney led the Black Hawks with 30 goals and 50 points. In that campaign, he was twice recognized with league Forward of the Week stripes.

In 2016/17, Swaney is the third Black Hawk and first Waterloo forward to win one of the league’s weekly honors. Robbie Beydoun has twice been named Goaltender of the Week, while Mikey Anderson has taken the corresponding title as a defenseman.
