The Waterloo Black Hawks close out the Iowa Classic with a win on Saturday, September 19, 2015.

With a perfect record during the 2015 Iowa Classic and a .500 mark during the preseason, the Waterloo Black Hawks enter the 2015/16 United States Hockey League regular season after a 3-1 win Saturday at Young Arena against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders.

The Black Hawks turned an odd-man rush into the opening goal at 8:05 of the first. Yuri Terao’s shot from the right circle never made it on net, but caromed instead to Brandon Schultz who flipped into an open side from the opposite ring.

Waterloo built the lead to 3-0 in the second, with puck movement back and forth across the slot. At 8:44, Marshall Moise was the beneficiary of a sequence of passes between David Cotton and Sam Rossini; Moise shoveled the disk past goalie Ben Blacker’s glove side. Ronnie Hein added a final Waterloo tally during a power play at 13:22, scoring from pointblank range.

The RoughRiders’ lone goal also came during a power play nearly three minutes later. Mitch Rainke blasted a shot into the net off the crossbar. The third period was scoreless.

Waterloo outshot Cedar Rapids 34-17. Starting netminder Cale Morris made five saves, while Dayton Rasmussen turned away 11 shots.

The United States Hockey League regular season begins for the Black Hawks Friday in Bloomington, Illinois, against the Thunder. One night later, Waterloo returns home to open the 2015/16 home schedule against the Muskegon Lumberjacks at Young Arena. The first 2,000 fans in attendance will receive a 2015/16 magnetic schedule.
