Five months after losing her seat on the Cedar Falls Board of Education, Joyce Coil has been re-elected.

The Board's former president was the highest vote-getter among three candidates in a special election held on Tuesday (Feb. 16, 2016). Voters chose Coil to fill a vacancy created when Jim Brown began his duties as mayor of Cedar Falls last month. The board opted for the special election, instead of appointing a replacement for Brown.

Coil earned nearly 40-percent of the 1,612 votes cast in Tuesday's election, receiving 643 votes. Eric Giddens finished second in the balloting with 580 votes (36-percent), while Meg Campbell got 384 votes (24-percent). Election results show there were also five write-in votes.

Coil, 59, previously served seven terms on the Cedar Falls school board, before voters ousted her in September. She finished fifth in what was essentially a six-person field.

Before losing her seat, Coil had served as the board's president for two years.
