A four-year-old boy is hospitalized in stable condition after being shot inside a Waterloo home this afternoon (Thursday, April 2, 2015).

Officers responded to a 911 emergency call of shots fired in the area of Mulberry and Vinton streets shortly before 2 p.m. today. Upon arrival, police learned that a bullet went through the exterior wall of a home at 1641 Mulberry Street. A child inside the home was shot once in the abdomen.

The boy was rushed to Unity Point-Allen Hospital in Waterloo and immediately went into surgery. Police said the boy is in stable condition and is expected to survive.

According to police, preliminary indications show the house hit by gunfire was not the intended target of the shooting. Investigators are trying to determine if the gunshots came from a passing vehicle or one that may have been parked nearby.
