Four people were injured in a four-vehicle accident in Cedar Falls Tuesday night (Jan. 8, 2019). A Cedar Falls woman was hurt in the crash, along with three people from Oelwein.

The accident happened around 6 PM at the intersection of Iowa Highway 58 and Viking Road, an intersection that's considered to be one of the most-dangerous in the Cedar Valley. Workers are currently in the process of building a $32.1 million interchange at the intersection. When complete, the interchange is expected to improve traffic flow and reduce the statistically high number of accidents that have occurred there in recent years.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, the chain-reaction crash happened when a pick-up driven by John Lambert, 18, of Waterloo, rear-ended a car driven by Jenna Berendzen, 42, of Cedar Falls. Her car was pushed into the back of a another car, driven by Ashley Welter, 27, of Waterloo. Welter's car then struck the rear of a car, driven by Lawren Winfield, 18, of Oelwein.

Officials said Berendzen and three occupants in Winfield's car, the driver and two passengers, all suffered injuries in the crash. Berendzen, however, was the only one who went to urgent care receive medical treatment.

Winfield's passengers were identified as Pandora Balladolid, 56, and Jewel Jones, 32, both from Oelwein.

Lambert, the driver of the pickup, was charged with failure to maintain control.
