4 Dead, 16 Injured in Fort Hood Shooting

Four people, including the gunman, were killed and 16 others injured in a shooting at Fort Hood in Killeen, Texas Wednesday evening.  Fort Hood officials said the gunman was a soldier who had been receiving mental health treatment and that he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Phone Service Interuption Impacting Oelwein, Calmar 911 Calls

Technicians are working to restore phone service to Oelwein, Calmar and surrounding areas.

A CenturyLink spokeswoman says the network outage is currently impacting 911 services in both communities and some long-distance calls are getting a busy signal. Cell phone service is working and people in Calmar are encouraged to use their cell phones to dial 911 while those in Oelwein should dial 319-283-4311 to reach the police department.

Waterloo Schools Will Not Use Good Friday As Snow Make-up Day

The last day of classes for students in the Waterloo School District will be on Monday, June 9th (2014), even if there are no more cancelled days this year. Earlier this month, district officials said they were considering the possibility of using Good Friday (April 18, 2014) as a snow make-up day to keep classes from going into the second week of June.

However, after exploring the Good Friday option further, district officials have determined that it would be logistically impossible to hold classes on April 18th. Therefore, the district’s five snow days will all be made up, as scheduled, at the end of the school year.

Death Of Jail Inmate Ruled An Accident

State investigators have ruled that the death of an inmate at the Black Hawk County jail earlier this month was an accident.

A report released by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation says 34-year-old James Terrell Taylor died of an accidental overdose of drugs, which he ingested prior to his arrest.

Convicted Waterloo Cop Killer Dies

The man convicted of killing two Waterloo police officers nearly 33 years ago has died in prison. Officials with the Iowa Department of Corrections (IDC) say James Michael “T-Bone” Taylor, 60, died Tuesday (March 18, 2014) at University Hospitals in Iowa City. Corrections officials say Taylor died of natural causes due to complications from an aortic aneurism.

Waterloo Schools’ Drop-Out Rate Falls Substantially

Statistics released by the Waterloo Community School District show a significant decrease in the number of high school students dropping out of class.

For the 2012-2013 school year, Waterloo’s dropout rate declined by 41 percent, falling to 3.95%. The previous academic year, 2011-12, the district’s dropout rate was 6.64%.

In Memoriam: Dean Osmundson

A memorial service will be held today (Tuesday, February 4, 2014) for Iowa Broadcasting legend Dean Osmundson of Marshalltown. Dean was the founder and first General Manager of KCRR, which went on-the-air as KGCI in 1984. He passed away peacefully at a hospice home in Gilbert, Arizona last week at the age of 88. The memorial service begins at 2:00 pm at Trinity Lutheran Church in Marshalltown.
