As the two-year reconstruction of U.S. Highway 63 continues on Waterloo's east side, the busy corridor is scheduled to be closed to through traffic for about three weeks starting on Tuesday (October 14, 2014).

According to the Iowa Department of Transportation (IDOT), the highway (Logan Avenue) will be closed between Newell and Donald streets while construction workers remove and replace pavement at the railroad crossing near George Washington Carver Academy. The train track project will require a detour through November 4th, weather permitting.

Northbound U.S. 63 traffic will be sent onto U.S Highway 218 near downtown Waterloo, north onto Airport Boulevard at Exit 185, then east onto West Airline Highway. Southbound U.S. 63 traffic will use the same detour route in reverse direction.

IDOT officials say local U.S. 63 traffic will be allowed in the work area, however, motor vehicles will be restricted to one lane in each direction until the railroad crossing project is complete.

The IDOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in construction zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.

The reconstruction of U.S. 63 on the north edge of Waterloo began in spring of 2013. The overall project between Newell and Donald streets is expected be complete before winter.

A second phase of the project -- rebuilding the highway from Newell to Franklin Street -- is expected to begin in 2015.
