Mayor Jim Brown is hoping to lead Cedar Falls for another two years.

The city’s top elected official plans to run for a second term in November. Brown announced his re-election bid in a press release on Tuesday (April 4, 2017).

“It’s humbling to receive so much support and encouragement from the public for the job I’m doing,” Brown said. “I respect and admire the council and staff and I have learned more about Cedar Falls and what it takes to keep the City running smooth.”

The former school board member was elected to his first term as Cedar Falls mayor by a wide margin on Dec. 1, 2015. Brown defeated long-time incumbent Jon Crews in a run-off election, garnering 75 percent of the votes cast. Crews officially dropped out of the race two days after finishing second to Brown in the November municipal election. The other candidate on the ballot, David Halterman, then launched a write-in campaign to challenge Brown in the run-off following his third-place finish in the initial vote.

“I campaigned on expanding business, improving communication and providing continued leadership,” Brown said. “I have kept my campaign promises and I’m grateful for the opportunity to represent Cedar Falls.”

Prior to Brown taking the oath of office on Jan. 2, 2016, Crews had served as mayor of Cedar Falls for 30 of the previous 44 years in three separate stints. Crews chose to suspend his campaign for the run-off against Brown, choosing to retire from public office instead of campaigning for another election. Crews then endorsed Brown to replace him.

“I’m learning every day,” Brown said. “Thanks to our great city staff, I was able to get up to speed quickly, especially working through another 500-year flood. It’s been a little more than a year since taking office and I enjoy the challenges. I hope I can continue to earn the support of voters in Cedar Falls.”
