Ongoing bridge work at a major highway interchange in Waterloo will require a traffic pattern shift and a ramp closure, beginning Tuesday evening (Aug. 11, 2015).

Traffic on northbound Interstate 380/westbound U.S. 20 at the I-380/U.S. 20/U.S. 218 interchange near Crossroads Center will be switched from the inside lane to the outside lane. The traffic pattern will be in place until early September, weather permitting, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s New Hampton construction office.

The traffic switch requires the closure of the northbound I-380 ramp into Waterloo during the overnight hours on Tuesday. Beginning sometime after 8 p.m. and continuing until approximately 6 a.m. on Wednesday (Aug.12), Northbound I-380 traffic will be detoured west on U.S. 20 to the Iowa Highway 21 interchange (exit 230), and back east on U.S. 20 to exit 232B for northbound U.S. 218, and then continue north on U.S. 218 to northbound I-380.

The single lane traffic may result in slow or stopped vehicles during peak travel times. Motorists may wish to seek alternative routes to avoid the traffic congestion, Iowa Department of Transportation (IDOT) officials said.

According to IDOT, the River Forest Road interchange on-ramp to northbound I-380 and westbound U.S. 20 from Evansdale will continue to be closed until early September.
