Black Hawks Shutout Capitols, Morris Improves to 5-1

Waterloo Black Hawks' goalie Cale Morris stopped all 21 shots he saw on Friday, February 6, 2015. The Black Hawks went on to beat the Madison Capitols at Alliant Energy Center, 5-0.

It was Morris’ second shutout in six games as a Black Hawk. Morris improved his USHL record this season to 5-1, and his save percentage climbed to .951.

The Hawks out shot Madison 42-21.

Tom Novak squeezed through traffic at the Madison blue line, to create the only goal of the opening period. When Novak couldn’t be knocked off the puck, it setup a two-on-one situation, and Max Coatta capitalized on Novak’s centering feed at 14:44.

Waterloo doubled their lead 52 seconds into the middle period. Henrik Rommel’s pass from the top of the left wing circle was deflected to the edge of the crease by a Madison stick. There, Novak collided with goalie Garrett Metcalf, and the puck slipped across the goal line; Novak was credited with the marker.

The Hawks broke the game open with a big third period which began with two goals separated by just 24 seconds. Ronnie Hein setup both, the first with a pass to Rem Pitlick originating behind the Madison net at 5:16. The Hawks caught Madison in transition with their next opportunity, as the puck moved from Hein to Pitlick to John Wiitala for the finish from the slot. Novak added a final tally from the right circle as the Hawks converted a power play with 7:38 remaining.

A three-games-in-three-days schedule continues Saturday and Sunday when Waterloo is back at home to host the Tri-City Storm.
