Black Hawks Rebound With Shutout, Morris Improves to 6-1-1

Waterloo Black Hawks' goalie Cale Morris did not allow a goal in regulation during three Waterloo Black Hawks weekend games, including a victorious 3-0 effort Sunday, February 8, 2015 against the Tri-City Storm at Young Arena.

The performance included 34 saves, as Tri-City outshot Waterloo 34-25. Morris was at his busiest during a 17-save second period.

On Friday, Morris had blanked the Madison Capitols with 21 stops during a 5-0 decision. Saturday, he made 23 saves through 60 minutes, but the game went to overtime with no score and the Storm eventually prevailed, 1-0.

During Sunday’s rematch, Ronnie Hein recorded the lone first period goal, steering past the Tri-City defense and snapping a wrist shot outside the blocker arm of Alec Dillon. Waterloo preserved the lead by killing off seven-and-a-half minutes of power play time prior to intermission, including a five minute major which was given to Alec McCrea.

Power play opportunities swung the Hawks way in the second period, and Waterloo converted the first of three. At 9:44, Dillon knocked down Hayden Shaw’s shot, but the rebound was left in the crease where Henrik Rommel located the disc and knocked it between the iron.

With 2:12 remaining and the Tri-City net empty for an extra attacker, Rommel scored from center ice during what was technically power play time, sealing the win. Meanwhile, Tri-City – the USHL’s best power play team – finished the night 0-for-6 in that special teams area.
