Defenseman Dazzles USHL with Scoring Flurry

Waterloo, Iowa–Brandon Montour was wherever the Waterloo Black Hawks needed him to be last weekend, and his efforts were rewarded by the United States Hockey League on Monday when he was recognized as the circuit’s CCM Defenseman of the Week.

Waterloo defeated the Omaha Lancers 5-3 on the road Friday and the National Team Development Program 6-4 Saturday; Montour set up both game-winning goals on his way to a five-point weekend.  The University of Massachusetts recruit scored his sixth goal of the season versus the Lancers, in addition to a pair of assists.  One night later, Montour contributed two more helpers.  At +3 for the weekend, the Oshweken, Ontario native also posted the best plus/minus rating among Waterloo defensemen.

Montour joins Hayden Shaw and Mark Friedman – who has been a two-time Defenseman of the Week – among Hawks blue-liners who have been recognized by the USHL during 2013/14.  All totaled, Waterloo players have won or shared one of the USHL’s three weekly awards on seven occasions this winter.

The scoring outburst moved Montour to third in points among USHL defensemen with six goals and 12 assists in his first 24 league games.  He is also tied for sixth in overall team scoring and equal with Blake Winiecki for second in power play points at eight, one behind Shaw.  Montour’s goal and one of his assists on Friday were recorded on special teams.

The Hawks’ effort last weekend pushed their record to 18-5-1 entering the league’s holiday break.  Waterloo returns to the ice next on December 27th versus the Chicago Steel.  The iWireless College Night will provide students with an opportunity to purchase $7 tickets in advance.  College seats are $8 on game day.  The next installment of 2013/14 Black Hawks player cards will also be distributed to the first 1,000 fans in attendance, courtesy of C&S Car Company.  For more information, call the Domino’s Black Hawks Box Office at (319) 291-7680.
