For a second consecutive night, the Waterloo Black Hawks and the Dubuque Fighting Saints have to go to a shootout out to determine a winner. Dubuque scored the 3-2 shootout win Saturday (Feb. 20, 2016) at Young Arena.

The Saints recorded the lone first period goal during the final seconds of a power play at 13:35. Zach Solow fed a pass circle-to-circle through the slot, setting up the goal from the right dot by Collin Theisen.

Forty-four seconds into the second, the Black Hawks tied the game; with Nick Swaney waiting at the top of the crease, Liam Pecararo centered a pass out of the left wing corner, which Swaney tipped in. Pecararo put the Hawks in front at 11:11 during a Black Hawks power play. Navigating to the slot in transition, Pecararo rifled a shot past Miska’s blocker side.

A ten-player scrum at center ice in the ensuing shift sent Dubuque to a major power play, and they cashed in for the equalizer at 15:49 when Willie Knierim redirected a Brett Boeing shot from the right point.

The third period was scoreless.

In the shootout, Dubuque's Dallas Gerads wound up for a full slap shot and sent his chance from just above the hashmarks past Garrett Metcalf. The Waterloo goalie had stopped the first five Dubuque attempts and made 34 saves in the overtime loss. Dubuque goaltender Hunter Miska stopped 32 shots and denied six shootout tries for the win.

The Hawks continue a string of six consecutive games against opponents from Iowa on Friday when they host the Sioux City Musketeers on Ladies  Night at Young Arena, presented by Kimball & Beecher Family Dentistry.  For tickets, call the Domino’s Black Hawks Box Office at (319) 291-7680 or visit waterlooblackhawks.com.
