The Lincoln Stars swung in front of the Waterloo Black Hawks during the second period Tuesday (Dec. 29, 2015) and held on for a 3-2 win at the IceBox in Lincoln.

Will D’Orsi opened the scoring for the Stars 9:17 into the game, steering through the left wing circle to snap a shot inside the short side goal post. Shane Bowers tied the game 1:11 before intermission; his chance from the high slot scooted through traffic and past goalie Patrik Virtanen.

Waterloo went in front on David Cotton’s power play redirection at 6:41 of the second, but Lincoln answered with Christian Evers’ five-on-three power play goal just over two minutes later. The Stars retook the lead at 11:31 with a patient odd-man rush, capped by Joachim Weberg, with a score from the left wing circle.

The Hawks could not squeeze a third period chance past Virtanen as the teams combined for just nine shots during the stalemate frame. Waterloo outshot Lincoln in every period, and by a final total of 26-18.

The Hawks meet the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders in the waning hours of 2015 on Thursday evening. The 6:05 p.m. New Year’s Eve contest is part of the Dupaco Cowbell Cup Series. Good seats are still available for the game by calling the Domino’s Black Hawks Box Office at (319) 291-7680.
