Black Hawks Clipped By Capitols, 3-2

The Madison Capitols denied a Waterloo Black Hawks comeback effort Friday at Young Arena, topping the home team, 3-2  on November 7, 2014.

Waterloo converted one of three power plays for the only goal of the opening period. At 12:50, Tyson McLellan fed a pass across the goal mouth, and John Wiitala redirected it into the net with one touch. The Hawks outshot Madison 13-11 during the frame.

Madison swung to the lead in the second with two goals on five shots. Sam McCormick flipped an equalizer into the net during the waning seconds of a Capitols power play at 13:29. Then the Caps went ahead at 17:52, thanks to a goal in transition by Marco Richter.

Former Black Hawk Cooper Watson pushed Madison to a 3-1 lead at 1:19 of the third period, set up for a chance from the slot when Haralds Egle drew Waterloo’s attention by carrying the puck through the right circle. Just 30 seconds later, McLellan got the goal back, roofing a shot under the crossbar and over the right shoulder of Garrett Metcalf.

The Madison goaltender stopped 10 other Waterloo shots in the period and 30 overall for the win. Kris Carlson took the loss with 23 saves.
