City officials plan to begin operations this week on the clean-up of thousands of gallons of biosolids that leaked from the Waverly Wastewater Treatment Facility late Sunday night (Dec. 27, 2015).

Approximately 220,000 gallons of stabilized liquefied biosolids were discharged from a storage tank around 11 p.m. when a pipe broke inside a pump house at the treatment facility, Waverly City Engineer Mike Cherry said.

According to Cherry, the liquefied biosolids are contained in a detention basin just west of the treatment facility, in a drainageway crossing the Waverly-Shell Rock Soccer Complex, and in the north-side soccer complex parking lot. Access to the parking lot from Cedar River Parkway is currently closed until the biosolids are removed.

Cleanup operations are scheduled to begin on Thursday and should take several days to complete.
