Black Hawk County authorities are warning the public of a telephone scam.

Sheriff's officials says someone claiming to be with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has been calling area residents demanding money so he or she can avoid additional taxes. If the money and some personal information isn't turned over to the IRS, the caller threatens criminal charges against the resident.

According to authorities, the phone number is being imitated to appear legitimate. The call appears to be from the Washington, D.C. area, but investigators have determined it's being made from outside the United States.

Residents are being reminded by authorities that the IRS does NOT make phone calls to obtain personal information or demand money. They say anyone receiving such a call should hang up without further comment. Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES should personal information be giving to a stranger.

Anyone who receives one of these calls or has questions, should contact their local law enforcement agency for advice.
