Deliberations are expected to begin today in the attempted murder trial of a Maynard man, accused of trying to run over an arresting police officer.

34 year old Abel Quijas Jr. is on trial in Fayette County District court in West Union; the case began last week, with prosecutors trying to prove Quijas intentionally ran his car at Oelwein Police officer Jay Tommasin, during a drug arrest in September of 2014.

Quijas was the subject of a drug investigation, in which authorities discovered crystal meth was being delivered to a home in Oelwein, destined for Quijas.

Authorities had set up a sting operation, with officers making the drug delivery. As police and deputies were attempting to take Quijas into custody, he got in his car to drive away.

In the process, an officer was narrowly missed by the vehicle, and Quijas was wounded by law enforcement. He was later arrested, following a manhunt in rural Fayette County.

If convicted of attempted murder, Quijas could face up to 25 years in prison.
