After a nearly year-long investigation, authorities have filed charges against five Independence residents and a juvenile, for causing considerable damage to the old Buchanan County Home, and to several residences in Brandon.

In July and August of 2014, the Buchanan County Sheriff received numerous reports of property damage done at the former Buchanan County Home, located on Lee Avenue, just outside of Independence. Damage consisted of broken or destroyed windows, doors, mirrors, ceiling fans, ceiling tiles, toilets, sinks and several other items.

In Brandon, someone used BB guns to damage or destroy numerous windows in buildings and vehicles.

Following this lengthy investigation, the Buchanan County Sheriff's Office has filed charges against 18 year olds Robert Solon, William Porter, Brett Bowers, Jason Grover, and Rachel Wheelock, all of Independence.
Solon, Porter and Bowers are charged with first degree criminal mischief and trespass, as well as other violations at the former County Home and in Brandon. Grover is cited for criminal mischief in the Brandon incidents, and Wheelock was arrested for being an accessory after the fact, theft and trespass.

A sixth suspect, a juvenile was referred to juvenile court services for fifth degree criminal mischief and trespass.
