A Vinton man has died in a two-vehicle accident in Linn County.

Authorities identified the victim as John Gibbs, 62. Sheriff's officials said he was killed after losing control of his vehicle on U.S. Highway 30 Wednesday morning (Jan. 17, 2017).

The crash happened near the 80th St. S.W. interchange, just north of Fairfax, around 7:45 AM.

According to investigators, Gibbs' eastbound vehicle left the roadway and struck several crash guard sand barrels in the median. The vehicle then re-entered the highway and collided with another vehicle, driven by Bruce Gardner, 67, of Garrison.

Officials said Gardner's vehicle came to a stop on the highway, while Gibbs' vehicle flipped onto its top. Gibbs had to be extricated.

Gibbs was taken to a Cedar Rapids hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Gardner was transported to another Cedar Rapids hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The accident remains under investigation.
