Ace Frehley Says He Has No Problem With Drug References in Steve Miller Cover

Some might find Ace Frehley‘s decision to cover the Steve Miller Band‘s ‘The Joker’ — with its famous line about a “midnight toker” — somewhat odd, considering his history with addiction.

But the former Kiss guitarist says he had no problem delivering the lyric. “I’m not anti-drug,” he tells Ultimate Classic Rock in the above video. “I can’t do drugs or drink because I did too many. I blew it. But I’m not anti-drug, or anti-alcohol. Everybody should be able to do what they want to do. It’s just that, if you have a problem with it, it’s time to quit.”

‘The Joker’ is part of Frehley’s upcoming album ‘Space Invader,’ the sixth solo effort in a career that goes back to his self-titled late-’70s debut while still with Kiss. Frehley’s most recent project was 2009′s well-received ‘Anomaly.’

“I think it’s going to be maybe a little heavier than ‘Anomaly,’” Frehley says of his new record. “I listened to my ’78 solo album with ‘New York Groove,’ my first solo record, and ['Space Invader'] has elements of everything from the past. I was trying to write songs with the fans in mind. Hopefully, they’re going to be pleasantly surprised.”

‘Space Invader,’ due on July 8, also features cover art from Ken Kelly, the artist who created the iconic imagery for Kiss’ ‘Destroyer‘ and ‘Love Gun‘ albums. Frehley has already issued an advance song from the project, ‘Gimme A Feelin.”
