The Iowa State Patrol is investigating a two-vehicle accident that killed three people and injured two others in Chickasaw County Tuesday night (Jan. 19, 2016).

The crash happened shortly before 6:30 p.m. on U.S. Highway 63 at a rural intersection, south of New Hampton. Authorities said a westbound car driven by Bertha Smith, 22, of Waterloo, failed to yield and pulled into the path of a northbound semi, driven by Kevin Powers, 43, of Ainsworth.

Three of the four passengers in Smith's car were killed. Authorities identified the victims as Latorris Duffie, 24; Keith Demry, 29; and Devin Gordin, 25, who's addresses were not given. According to the Iowa State Patrol, none of the deceased were wearing seat belts. One passenger was ejected from the vehicle.

Smith and 25-year-old Shaun Anderson, the fourth passenger, were taken to a Mason City hospital for treatment. Powers, the semi driver, was not hurt.
