The volleyball teams at Cedar Falls, Waterloo's three biggest schools and Waverly-Shell Rock all will begin their journey to the 2014 state tournament the week of October 27. Teams in Iowa's two smallest classes began regional first-round matches Tuesday night (October 21st)..

Waterloo East and Waterloo West will both have to win three regional games to qualify for the state tournament in Class-5A, but one of them will be eliminated in the regional quarterfinals. West hosts East on October 27. The winner advances to face Cedar Falls in the regional semfinals three nights later. Ankeny and Mason City are also in the the six-team bracket.

Waterloo Columbus Catholic will be competing for a state tournament berth in Class-3A. The Sailors open regional play with a quarterfinal match Aplington-Parkerburg on October 27. The winner faces either South Hardin or Roland-Story at Story City on October 30. Nevada, Greene County, Gilbert and Southeast Valley are also part of the regional bracket.

In Class-4A, 9th-ranked Waverly-Shell Rock opens the regional tournament with a quarterfinal match against Fort Dodge at home.on October 27. The winner plays at Charles City on October 30. The six-team bracket also includes Boone, Humboldt and Webster City.

The regional tournament began Tuesday, October 21 with regional first-round matches in Class-1A and -2A. (115 -1A) (96-2A) (64-3A) (48-4A) (40-5A) In all, there are 363 high school volleyball teams across Iowa. Only 40 will make it to the state tournament -- eight in each class.

The state tournament runs November 11-24 at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids.
