Waterloo Police were busy overnight, with two chases, both involving teenagers, and both ending with crashes into utility poles.

The first incident happened at about 11:30pm Thursday in the 500 block of Lime Street in Waterloo. Waterloo Police tried to stop a car for a traffic violation. But the driver refused to pull over, tried to flee the scene, but lost control and hit a utility pole and a no-parking sign. The collission snapped off the utility pole.

The driver, a 13 year old, and his passengers fled on foot. They were later located. The driver, whose name was not released, was charged with eluding and operating without the owner's consent.

The second chase began around 12:30 this (Friday) morning in the area of Washington Street and Highway 63. Officers attempted to stop a car in reference to a warrant investigation.

The driver, identified as 18 year old Nicholas Campbell-Scott of Palo, was recognized by Waterloo police as having a no-bond probation violation warrant, plus warrants from other jurisdictions. Authorities also later determined that he was listed as an escapee from a residential center in Linn County.

Campbell-Scott sped off, leading officers on a chase that ended at West 2nd and Western Avenue, when he lost control of the car and crashed into a utility pole. Campbell-Scott tried to fee on foot but was arrested after a brief struggle.

A passenger, identified as 16 year old Dewon Campbell Junior, also tried to flee the scene but was arrested.

Officers recovered 2 loaded handguns several feet from the car, that had apparently been thrown out at the end of the chase.

Both suspects were taken to the Black Hawk County jail on charges of interference with official acts involving a firearm and carrying weapons; Campell-Scott is also charged with OWI-eluding and driving while his license is suspended.
